Energy & Geoscience Institute at the University of Utah
Home to leading experts in the fields of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and engineering, the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI) at the University of Utah is the world’s largest University based industry cost-shared upstream E&P research program of its kind, with 30+ Corporate Associate members representing 20 countries.

The institute is uniquely positioned to engage high caliber, innovative, and creative geoscience and engineering professionals to expand the body of scientific research and knowledge in the hydrocarbon and geothermal fields for both industry and government projects. EGI staff hail from 15 countries, speak 20+ languages and have a wide range of technical expertise that creates a diversity of thought that fosters cross-discipline solutions and technologies.

Our history dates back to 1973, when the Earth Science and Resources Institute (ESRI) was founded at the University of South Carolina, with a primary focus on geoscience research in North Africa. Then, in 1986, ESRI became the first American Institute to enter the former Soviet Union. A decade later, the original ESRI organization merged with the University of Utah’s Research Institute (UURI) in Salt Lake City, with a primary emphasis on geothermal energy research. As EGI, the focus on partnership and collaboration has continued to expand the body of scientific research and knowledge in the hydrocarbon and geothermal fields for both industry and government projects across more than 70 countries.

The University of Utah is recognized as a Tier One teaching and research institution—in the good company of Stanford, Harvard, and MIT. Innovation and intrapreneurial success are hallmarks of the collaborations forged from the scientific endeavors between EGI and our Corporate Associate members. From the highly focused, industry guided research topics to the field and short courses to the newly launched Masters of Science in Petroleum Engineering offered by the college of Chemical Engineering and EGI, we are proud of the impact we’ve had on current and future energy industry decision makers.
